Mother Juice, Boston

Don’t you just love a local recommendation from someone who ‘gets’ healthy eating? Mother Juice in Back Bay is just that.

We were delighted to meet Bostonian Ophelia Muradian, who told us about neighbourhood café Mother Juice. She described it as calm, cool and in a wonderful area to explore.

She was spot on and it is our favourite place to eat healthy in Boston.

It’s located on Newbury Street, a beautiful tree-lined street with tall red bricks where you can find stores like Madewell and Lululemon.

The setting

Mother Juice on Newbury Street looks inviting. Potted pink flowers line the stairs down to a sun-drenched courtyard with stylish steel and wood tables waiting to be sat on.

Co-founders Ellen Fitzgerald and Laura Baldini began Mother Juice at the farmers’ market in Union Square, Somerville, MA, and soon launched Boston’s first juice and smoothie truck. In 2014, they opened the first of three stores in the city. We met Laura and she was a total joy – passionate, excited and full of enthusiasm about supporting local organic farmers.

An award from Boston Magazine for Best Juice Bar in 2017 is on show and a hand-written poster has the vegan treats on offer.

The little things

We thought the staff were amazing. We loved Paris who served us and was so excited about the healthy eating trend hitting Boston. Laura was an incredible advert for her business – friendly and welcoming.

We thought the kombucha taps at the till were pretty cool and magazines like Bo Concept dotted around were thoughtful and a great touch.

The sunshine also helped make it an all round not-to-be missed healthy food experience.

The fresh juice test

We tried The Moju – a blend of kale, cucumber, green apple, celery, green pepper, orange and ginger. It was cold-pressed, organic and made in front of us fresh.

It was an unexpected blend that worked well.

It was $7.95 plus tax for 12oz.

What we ate

Pretty much everything at Mother Juice! We tried a range of their plant-based salads including the Super Greens which was packed with mixed greens, peppers, carrots, walnuts, sesame, cherry tomatoes, scallions and topped with an almond-lime dressing. It was delicious.

We also tried their hummus toast which was made with Udi’s gluten-free bread. We had a choice of four flavours of hummus and went for original and spinach basil.

And we finished off with their açai bowl- a perfect blend of açai, coconut milk, almond butter, blueberry, granola and shredded coconut.

What made us glow?

The staff, the food, the fun and friendly vibe. And the setting.

If we hadn’t discovered Mother Juice then we wouldn’t have discovered Newbury Street which was a great place to get to know beautiful Boston.
