The motto of Backyard Bowls is “It’s all about eating real food and ingredients you can pronounce”!

Located in Downtown Los Angeles, this cute little café specialises in sweet and savoury bowls.

Backyard Bowls first opened in Santa Barbara selling açai bowls and, after huge success, they expanded the menu and opened in more locations in LA.

I challenge you not to love their delicious bowls in one of LA’s vibrant neighbourhoods!

The setting

Backyard Bowls is close to 7th Street, the epicentre of Downtown LA and a public transportation hub.

Their sleek blue and black storefront blends with the modern sky scrapers and the cool concrete walls make the colourful chairs and tables pop.

Plants are everywhere- on the counters, floors and shelves. The space is light filled and has a small seating area, plus a few tables outside. The open-windows make it great for people-watching and provide fantastic light for Instagram!

The open kitchen also brightens up the space and I always find it fun to watch your food being prepared.

The little things

I really appreciated how thoughtful the staff were. They happily accommodate any dietary restrictions or requests. Dogs are welcome and given water.

Don’t miss the instagram must “You are a Goddess living in a city of Angels” wall art around the corner.

The fresh green juice test

Backyard Bowls offers a choice of six juices. If you read my reviews, you will know I always go for the greenest juice.

I ordered the “Green the Smoothie” with spinach, kale, banana, strawberry, mango, spirulina, coconut oil, coconut water, coconut milk (without honey and bee pollen).

A perfect balance between super green healthy ingredients and sweet fruit.

What we ate

The staff advise ordering several dishes, as the portions are small.

I started with the arroz verde bowl which has flavourful green rice and lentils, a massaged kale salad, a sweet potato stew, green tahini, cucumber, carrots, avocado, hummus, shallots, hemp seeds, micro greens, sprouts and pink radish.

As a side, I ordered avocado toast which was a thick layer of mashed avocado served with pink radish and micro greens.

It was honestly one of the best toasts I have ever had!

For dessert, I had the dragon bowl with pitaya, banana, mango, coconut milk, granola, kiwi, coconut flakes (without the normal ingredients of yogurt and honey).

I love stunning vibrant pink colour of the pitaya bowl. They also serve oatmeal bowls which must be great for breakfast. The food is served in colourful ceramic bowls and is both delicious and fresh.

What else?

Backyard Bowls puts the emphasis on serving food that is good for you and they don’t compromise on origin or freshness. They prefer organic, locally produced and sustainable foods.

They advertise themselves as being a 100% clean energy company and Certified Green Business which we always appreciate.

There is plastic – containers, cups and straws but it is all compostable which is a good step toward more eco-friendly practices. Backyards Bowls also have other branches in town, Santa Barbara and Santa Monica.

What made me glow?

The delicious fresh food in one of LA’s coolest upcoming neighbourhoods, plus the staff’ making sure I had a great experience.

The food is very reasonably priced for Los Angeles and I suggest ordering multiple dishes if you want to feel full.
