EdinburghHula - Award-winning café in a historic setting

Hula was established in 2007 and has since become a multi-award winning Glowcation in Edinburgh. Set on the corner of the iconic West Bow and Grassmarket, it’s bang in the middle of Edinburgh’s World Heritage zone.

The setting

At first we were distracted by the pretty streets surrounding Hula. Take a ramble as they are well worth a visit. Once inside, there’s plenty of room.

A tropical theme dominates with a bright, jungle mural taking over the main wall.

Green banquettes, pale blue and wicker chairs are accompanied by pastel tables.  Exposed stone lines the main window and tropical plants are dotted around.

There’s also outside seating in a small area lined with wooden trough of plants. We chose to sit here so we could take in the historic setting.

The green juice test

Hula has a choice of five green and super juices, three mixed juices and three simple juices. Plus, a wide selection of smoothies, milkshake smoothies and organic boosters.

We tried the Chia Fields juice – a thick mix of cucumber, apple, chia seeds and kale.

The little things

Hula makes everything very user friendly. There’s baby changing facilities, a disabled toilet and free wi-fi.

The staff were friendly and helpful too.

What we ate

Hula has an extensive menu of toasts, sandwiches, soups, salads and poké bowls.

We visited at breakfast and tried a filling Nutty Professor Milkshake smoothie with peanut butter and banana, the warming porridge with honey and cinnamon, a vitamin packed Açai bowl with banana, strawberry, blueberry and coconut milk topped with toasted coconut, chai, banana slices, cocoa nibs, blueberries and GF granola and finally, a Matcha Nana Bowl- a combination of vanilla, matcha and banana smoothie topped with toasted raspberry granola, blueberries and peanut butter.

Then, even though we were quite full, we couldn’t resist a pretty matcha latte.

The bill

Milkshake Smoothie £3.75
Chia Fields £3.95
Porridge £4.50
Açai Bowl £6.95
Matcha Nana Bowl £7.50
Matcha Latte £3.50

What else?

Hula delivers and offers a catering service.

What made us glow?

The location and the choice!

And the relief that we had finally found a great Glowcation in the city!
