In demand for its all day rainbow-coloured breakfasts, vegan menu and wide GF choices, Trei Café has put Melbourne’s Glen Waverley firmly on the health food map.

The space

Trei brings life and soul to the suburbs. The decor is crisp and simple with white walls, pale woods, white chairs, hanging lamps and soothing plants – you’ll want to move in!

The little things that make a difference

All the dishes are all beautifully presented and bursting with colour and vibrancy.

They’re putting ‘eat the rainbow’ into good practice.

The fresh juice test

Trei doesn’t do fresh juice, but has a great choice of smoothies (including a Virgin Breakfast Martini!) and lattes. I went for their beetroot latte, as it was too pretty not to try. Made with steamed coconut milk, it had the perfect balance of sweet and earthy flavours in one creamy cup.

What we ate

More like, what didn’t we eat! We began with their vegan bowls. Trei have recently launched a whole vegan menu with tons of amazing dishes, all for just $13.

We chose the Goodness Bowl with beetroot hummus, roasted veg, brown rice and avocado. We also ordered their Kenko Bowl which is definitely a must try dish. We’re talking pink noodles, turmeric sushi rolls, rainbow radish, toasted pine nuts and a miso dressing… delicious!

We couldn’t miss out on a side of their signature sweet potato fries. I had been craving these for so long and they definitely lived up to my expectations.

Thick cut, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside and served with avocado salsa and lime… everything you could ever want for a fry.

To finish it all off, in came the vegan Cookies & Cream Hotcakes served with vanilla coconut ice cream, fresh berries and crumbled cookie. These may have been more like cold cakes after taking a million photos, but they were still a serious taste sensation.

What we’d return for…

The staff and owner Malik and Roni were so kind and accommodating, it was like they were welcoming us into their home!  Plus, all those colours! Trei is a living example of how vegan food can look and taste amazing!
