“At Jane, healthy eating means having a salad and a cookie—it’s all about balance.” Jane was founded in 2011 by Amanda Michael with the simple aim of spreading her deep seated love of all things culinary. The iconic San Francisco café serves healthy food with an emphasis on flavour and quality and everything is made fresh daily, from scratch.

There are now three branches across the city and we visited the original on Fillmore.

The setting

Jane is on Fillmore St, but in Pacific Heights, not the Fillmore district.  It’s in a Notting Hill boutique shopping-style area that you can’t rush. Be prepared to queue as Jane’s is popular and rightly so.

The space

It’s a busy space with high ceilings and a long queue. We were a large group so we hovered by the bar next to the counter and while one of the group was waiting to order, the rest of us gathered seats as they came free. But go prepared to hunt for a chair.

Small tables line the wall and the vibe is San Fran cool with statement industrial lighting and a graffiti wall behind the serving bar.

There is plenty to look at while you wait. The decor for a start is super pretty and the latte cups are some of the most beautiful we have ever seen. And the customers coming in are a complete mix- from families, to digital nomads to local gym bunnies.

The fresh juice test

The café is famous for its coffee, custom blended herbal tisanes and its signature ‘get your greens’ smoothie.

The smoothie is a blend of kale, spinach, green apple, cucumber, lemon juice and agave. Booster options include chlorella, spirulina or moringa. Also, you’ll be missing out if you don’t try the hot drinks  and lattes including the creamy Tasty Turmeric Tonic.

What we ate

We went for breakfast and it was worth the wait. The gluten-free granola came with mixed berries and we picked almond milk (other options included rice or soy).

The gluten free quinoa bread toasted with honey was ordered on repeat.

And the Detox smoothie bowl was the perfect morning start with pineapple, spinach, parsley, coconut milk, almond butter, lemon juice and chia seeds topped with coconut flakes, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and bee pollen.

The little things that make a difference

Jane’s selection of amazing bread made fresh daily. Plus, their commitment to creating the perfect loaf. You can also order in on Caviar and Grubhub.

And check out the most beautiful latte take-out cups.
